B.O.L. was the acronym for 'Bertelmann On-Line', the former owner of bol.com. 'Bol' is the Dutch word for sphere or circle, hence the logo is basically a circle with a face drawn in. The face is drawn with the same three letters, 'b' and 'o' for the eyes, 'l' for the nose.
